As we mentioned last week, we recently did our own college tour of several schools in the South. We visited Duke, Elon, High Point, and UNC. We chose these schools because we have worked with many students who have applied to them in the past, and they provide a good example of what a regionally focused college tour might look like. We highly recommend adding these Southern colleges to your list of schools to consider.
Consider Applying to These Southern Colleges
The South definitely feels like a world away from Colorado, and this sense of going somewhere new and different appeals to many of our students. Plus, many parents who are initially hesitant about their children going so far away have been swayed by the beautiful campuses, Southern manners, and excellent educations offered by Southern schools.
High Point University
If you’re considering applying to colleges in the South, we think High Point should be on your list. Though not very well known in the West, it is a stellar school with a beautiful campus (part of the campus is actually a designated Aboretum and Botanical Garden), (relatively) low tuition, and a student-centered mission. High Point has an incredible business school, the Earl N. Philips School of Business. With about 4500 undergraduate students, it has an accessible and friendly feel. As a bonus, it has an on-campus steak house that is included in the meal plan!
Elon University
We also really appreciated the offerings at Elon University, a great example of a mid-sized college (approx. 6000 undergraduate students). Elon has one of the best study abroad programs in the nation, with 72% of students having some international study experience.
Duke University
Duke’s reputation speaks for itself, but we can also say we were impressed with the feel of the campus and the varied opportunities Duke offers its undergraduate students. For instance, 50% of students participate in faculty research, and it has a great global education program.
