Seniors, can you believe you only have one semester of high school left?? Are you excited? Scared? Over it? All of the above? We hope you’ve been following our Checklist for Incoming Seniors, but if you haven’t, here’s a little mid-year advice on how to make second semester senior year successful, fun, and stress-free.
Tips for a Great Second Semester Senior Year
- Don’t Slack Off. We know it can be tempting to ease up during this final stretch. But grades do still matter since many schools require you to submit final transcripts. You’ve worked hard to get to this point–don’t throw it away now!
- Finish Your Financial Aid Application. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) deadline is June 30, 2017, but parents should complete it as soon as possible (many colleges have an internal deadline in February). If you need to complete any other applications for specific scholarships or aid, those should be prioritized as well.
- Don’t Freak Out. Since many applications are due January 1, second semester can feel like one long waiting game. Try to stay calm and focus on spending time with your friends and family as you wait for the final verdict on where you’ll be spending the next four years. Thinking about what you enjoy right now can help ease the stress of not knowing what’s to come. Deep breaths also help.
- Plan for the Summer. We think getting a steady job the summer after senior year makes sense both because it cultivates independence and responsibility and because the spending money will come in handy next year! You can also think about taking a math class during the summer. It can be very helpful to get that math requirement out of the way before you have a full load of college classes to worry about in the fall.
