If your student is struggling in school it can be very stressful. But if you layer that with a learning disability it can be even more challenging. Parents of students with learning disabilities are often worried about getting the help their student needs to succeed in the classroom. Often times the schools don’t have the resources you need to really make a difference. That is why hiring a private tutor can be the answer.
Working With Students With Learning Disabilities
When a student has a learning disability (such as ADD/ADHD or dyslexia), a traditional classroom can be challenging because the student learns in a different way.
At Elite Academics, we recommend to parents that if your student has a learning disability and you would like to hire a tutor, you need to find a tutoring service that is trained in these areas. There are many ways to present materials to someone with a learning disability that can make learning easier. When shopping for a private tutor, be sure to ask about the training the tutoring staff completes.
Hire The Right Tutor
While it is not a requirement, we have found that students who have learning disabilities are more comfortable and are more likely to succeed when the tutor has had similar challenges. One of our trained tutors has dyslexia and she has made tremendous strides in her life to overcome it and is able to relate better, present information more effectively and build a stronger sense of trust with her students.

You made a very interesting point about students with specific learning disabilities are more comfortable learning from tutors who have had similar challenges. This would make sense to me since they would feel like their struggles were understood. I would imagine that another good option would be to hire a tutor who specializes in working with students who have a specific learning disability, so that even if they haven’t had the condition themselves they will still be able to help the students feel like they are understood.
