Summer Tutor: One Great Way to Start the Year Strong

April 12, 2017UncategorizedNo commentsNiki Lopez

The end of the school year is approaching at an amazingly fast clip, which means students’ heads are filling with plans for lazy pool days, summer camp shenanigans, and family vacations. We are all for treating the summer as a time for rest, rejuvenation, and quality time with friends and family. So why do we also recommend hiring a summer tutor?

Why Hiring a Summer Tutor Makes Sense

Hiring a summer tutor doesn’t mean giving up all of your freedom for the summer. Instead, it allows students to have a much more relaxing break overall because it prevents any feelings of dread associated with a new school year.

We especially recommend hiring a summer tutor for students in three specific situations:

  • Does your high school assign reading and essays that are due right when school resumes? Prevent a guaranteed panic during that last week (or last night!) of summer break by hiring a tutor to help you stay on track throughout the summer. Teachers don’t assign this kind of work just to torture kids (we promise). The goal is to keep your mind engaged and active and thus to ease the pain of academic reentry in the fall. When you hire a summer tutor to help you through, you’ll end up getting a lot more out of these assignments. (It can also prevent parent-child conflict—always a worthy goal.)
  • Are you heading into freshman year of college at a school that requires calculus? This can be very overwhelming for many students, so hiring a calculus tutor over the summer can make the college transition go much more smoothly.
  • Are you going to be taking Algebra 2 in the fall? Many high schools have students take Algebra 1, then geometry, and then Algebra 2. Predictably, students often find that they have forgotten much of what they learned in Algebra 1 by the time they take the second course. Prevent the suffering that comes along with that catch-up period by hiring an algebra tutor for the summer.

These are three of the most common scenarios that would make hiring a summer tutor a good idea, but it also makes sense to hire a tutor if a student is struggling in any particular subject. A summer tutor can make all the difference in the confidence students have about beginning a new school year, and there will still be plenty of time for swimming, sunning, and other summer fun.
